Subspecialty Interests

Surgical interests include cervical and lumbar disc prolapse, degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, spinal deformity, spinal tumours, spinal trauma and minimally invasive spinal surgery.

He also has a major interest in non-operative management of spinal conditions and spinal rehabilitation.

Profile

Mr. Ashley Poynton is a committed and highly experienced spinal surgeon with international fellowship training in Spinal Surgery.

Having completed his Orthopaedic higher surgical training under the auspices of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001 Mr. Poynton was awarded The Certificate of Specialist Training and admitted onto the Specialist Register of the Irish Medical Council.

Following on from this he underwent further sub speciality training over 2 years based at The Hospital for Special Surgery (Cornel University), and Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital, Manhattan, NewYork, USA. This spinal fellowship training programme is world class and involved high volume exposure to all aspects of spinal surgery, including minimally invasive surgery, degenerative, deformity, trauma and spinal oncology. It also involved a fellowship in metabolic bone diseases, a combination of laboratory and clinical research focusing particularly on biology of bone healing and fusion enhancement. Mr. Poynton also has a strong academic background with an MD from TCD in 2000 and over 50 publications in peer review journals along with 5 textbook chapters.

Following his return from fellowship in 2003, Mr. Poynton was appointed to the Mater Misericoridae Hospital (incorporating the National Spinal Injuries Unit), Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital and the National Rehabilitation Unit as a Consultant Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon. His major focus was to develop and enhance the National Spinal Injuries Unit and create a multidisciplinary team capable of undertaking highly complex spinal surgery.

Mr. Poynton is now working in full time private practice since 2011. He has created The Poynton SpineCare Institute and aims to develop the Institute into the premier spinal clinic in Ireland for the delivery of comprehensive multidisciplinary care for a wide spectrum of spinal disorders.

Mr. Joseph Fournier

MD MS
Consultant Adult and Paediatric Spine Surgeon

Joseph Fournier is a Spine Surgeon with international fellowship training in both adult and paediatric spine surgery including paediatric spinal deformity. He also has specific training in spinal pain management procedures.

He studied medicine in France with one year in Trinity College Dublin. Following his basic surgical training he completed his higher orthopaedic surgical training receiving a prize for best result in France Greater Western Region for the final exam.

After spending two years sharing time between national research institute and duties as an attending trauma surgeon in a Level 1 Trauma Centre he was appointed for two years as a paediatric orthopaedic consultant in the Clocheville Paediatric Hospital in Tours. Following this Joseph completed the national spinal deformity fellowship in Edinburgh, Scotland, one of the largest centres for deformity by volume in the UK. He then undertook the spinal fellowship in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, covering all aspect of adult spinal surgery.

Joseph also has a strong academic background with a MD, and an MS in Biophysics and Medical Imaging. He is also certified as a Clinical Investigator according to EU guidelines, with more than 20 publication and communications, 1 book chapter and 1 international patent. He is currently completing a PHD with special interest in characterisation of mechanical properties of soft tissues.

He is delighted to join The Poynton SpineCare Institute and will be a major contributor to the Institute’s on ongoing expansion programme and mission to provide the highest quality of care for spinal patients.

Marie Walsh

Marie Walsh qualified as Registered General Nurse in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in 1997. Since qualifying she has developed her skills and knowledge in nursing, orthopaedics and health service management. On qualifying she staffed as RGN on the trauma orthopaedic unit – St Agnes Ward which incorporated the National Spinal Injuries Unit delivering patient care and developing her orthopaedic skills and knowledge. She undertook a Post Graduate Higher Diploma in conjunction with RCSI in Cappagh Hospital in 2001/2002 and returned to Mater Misericordiae Hospital to the role of Clinical Nurse Manager.

In 2004 Marie took the position of Orthopaedic Clinical Facilitator in Tallaght Hospital, this position incorporated two roles. One of which was coordinating a postgraduate orthopaedic course in conjunction with Trinity College. The other role of the position was clinical facilitator for the elective and trauma orthopaedic units. During this time Marie also undertook a BSc in Nursing. In 2006 Marie returned to clinical management when she took the position of clinical nurse manager 2 of a 37 bed trauma unit which incorporated the national referrals center for pelvic and acetabular trauma. Over the next number of years she developed both her nursing and health service management skills with roles including – Day Ward Business manager and Orthopaedic Co ordinator.

Marie joined the Poynton SpineCare Institute in January 2015. Her role is Institute Manager and Spine Specialist Nurse.

Claire Whelan

Profile

Claire graduated from University College Dublin in 2006 with an honours degree in Physiotherapy. After qualifying, Claire worked in Beaumont Hospital gaining a wealth of experience in both ward and outpatient rehabilitation. During this time Claire was an acting senior physiotherapist in Neurosurgery, specialising in rehabilitation of patients’ post spinal surgery and in patients with complex back and neck pathology. Claire also worked in the Beacon Hospital as a senior Orthopaedic physiotherapist, rehabilitating patients after joint replacement surgery, spinal surgery and ligament reconstruction surgery. In addition to Claire’s hospital based experience, she has worked in private practice treating a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders.

Claire has a keen interest in Pilates and is a qualified APPI Pilates teacher. Claire has further developed with expertise in Pilates and movement based rehabilitation through reformer based Pilates training.

Currently Claire is completing her masters at Keele University in the UK, focusing her professional development in pain and movement dysfunction. Claire is delighted to join the Poynton Spine care Institute.

Pamela Hughes

Profile

Pamela graduated from The University of Birmingham with a First Class Honours Physiotherapy Degree in 2013. Prior to this she completed a Sports Science degree in Brunel University West London where she also achieved First Class Honours. Following her studies, Pamela spent three years working in Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust. During this time she completed her core rotations, including Musculoskeletal Outpatients, Trauma and Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, providing her with excellent experience in the assessment and treatment of spinal patients. She held a Senior Musculoskeletal Outpatient post prior to moving back to Ireland.

Pamela has a background in sport having spent several years representing Ireland in a range of athletics events. Highlights included coming sixth at the European Youth Olympics and making the final at the World Junior Championships in high jump. She also played hockey for Leinster at underage level.

Pamela has a keen interest in spinal rehabilitation and has commenced her APPI Pilates training. She is thrilled to join such an experienced, dynamic and forward thinking team here at the Poynton SpineCare Institute.

Claire Tynan

Profile

Claire attended the Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh where she gained an honours degree in physiotherapy. She then went onto work in the Sports Surgery Clinic where she worked on her development of muscloskeltal and orthopaedic knowledge. She was acting senior in their Orthopaedic ward and was involved in the development of their spinal rehabilitation program.

Claire also has experience in Occupational health, Women’s health and Chronic fatigue, and she has worked with high level football and rugby teams.

Spinal rehabilitation is her main interest area and has nearly nine years of experience working as a Pilates instructor.

She is delighted to join the Poynton team.

Eilis Dolan

Profile

Eilis Dolan is a Clinical Specialist Musculoskeletal (MSK) and Sports Physiotherapist. She graduated from the University of Ulster with a BSc (Hons) degree in Physiotherapy in 1996 and completed her Masters in Sports Physiotherapy in Cardiff University in 2004.

Eilis has extensive clinical and management experience in a range of physiotherapy settings in Ireland, UK and Australia. Her speciality is the management of musculoskeletal, orthopaedic, and sports injuries, with particular emphasis on spinal injuries and lower limb biomechanics. She is experienced in orthopaedic and minor injuries triage and the management of acute and chronic spinal musculoskeletal injuries. Eilis was National Lead Physiotherapist with the Irish Women’s Hockey Team from 2012 to 2014, and in addition to this and other work with elite athletes, enjoys working with occupational, adolescents, chronic pain and older patients. She is also a Certified Pilates Instructor.

Eilis is delighted to have joined the Poynton SpineCare team, and is excited to be bringing her experience to the role of developing physiotherapy services available to spinal patients attending the PSCI.

In her spare time, Eilis enjoys keeping fit, adventure racing, trekking and Pilates.
